The original Accrington Stanley folded in 1963, and although the new club, founded in 1968, bears the same name it is an entirely separate entity.
The new club joined the Lancashire Combination in 1970 spending eight seasons and winning the Combination title twice.
In 1982, the club became founder members of the North West Counties First Division.
Three years later, they were promoted to the Northern Premier League (NPL) First Division, and in 1991, were promoted to the NPL Premier Division following the resignation of South Liverpool.
In 1995, manager Eric Whalley took a controlling interest in the club and as chairman set about improving the Crown Ground, eventually bringing it up to Football League standards.
In 2003 Stanley won the NPL Premier League and were promoted to the Conference.
After mid-table finishes in 2004 and 2005, Stanley stormed to the Conference title in 2006 to win promotion back to the Football League.
