AFC Wimbledon![]() ![]() AFC Wimbledon has a unique history in the annals of English football. The original Wimbeldon was bought by businessman Peter Winkelman in 2000. In September 2000, the FA took the unprecedented step of granting Winkelman permission to re-locate the club to Milton Keynes, 54 miles north. Winkelman would later rebrand the club as Milton Keynes Dons. In response, a group of Wimbledon FC supporters decided to form a new club. AFC Wimbledon was founded in June 2002 and entered Combined Counties League, finishing 3rd and narrowly missing out on promotion. The following season however, they won their first 21 league games and stormed to the title to win promotion to the Isthmian League First Division. They followed that up with another league triumph, winning promotion to the Isthmian Premier at the first attempt. The higher level though, proved a bit more challenging. Wimbeldon lost out in the play-offs in 2005-06 and again in 2006-07 In October 2006, Milton Keynes Dons, recognised AFC Wimbledon as the rightful owners of all trophies won by Wimbledon FC. All trophies and club memorabilia were transfered to AFC Wimbeldon The following season, under new manager Terry Brown, the club won promotion to the Conference South. A year later, they were Conference South champions, and secured a place in the Conference National. 2009-10 was a season of consolidation. Wimbledon finished 8th, and missed out on the play-offs. But a year later they were runners-up, and after beating Luton Town in the play-offs, finally gained promotion to the Football League.
