![]() The early history of Barnet FC is uncertain but a club playing under that name competed in the amateur Olympian League (and later the North London League) between 1888 until the club was wound up in November 1901. RootsRecent research however suggests that the modern club is in fact descended from two quite separate sides. The first of these, founded in 1890, was known variously as Avenue FC, Barnet Avenue FC and Barnet. The second club, Alston Works Athletic FC, was founded in 1901, and later competed under the name Barnet Alston. In 1912 the two clubs merged to form Barnet & Alston FC, and when the club was reformed after the First World War, they became simply Barnet, and played in the amateur Athenian League until they adopted professionalism in 1965 and joined the Southern League. Stan FlashmanIn 1984, the club were on the brink of closure, before a new chairman, Stan Flashman bailed them out. Two years later it was announced that the Gola League, in which the club competed, would become the Conference and offer the chance of promotion to the Football League. Promotion to the LeagueAfter a number of near misses, the "Bees" achieved promotion to Division Four in 1991 and then promotion to Division Two (old Third Division) in 1993. Unable to survive at the higher level, the club were relegated the following season and in 2001 they dropped back into the Conference. In 2005 the club were Conference champions and returned to League football. Click on the icons below for more on Barnet FC;
