Barnsley were founded by the curate of St Peter’s Church in 1887. As Barnsley St Peter’s FC, the team played in the local leagues until 1897, when they successfully applied to join the Football League, and dropped St Peter’s from their name. They were to remain in the Second Division until 1932, where they consistently hovered around mid-table. They did however enjoy some success in the FA Cup. Beaten finalists in 1910, they went on to lift the trophy in 1912, beating West Bromwich Albion in a replay. The club were relegated twice in the Thirties (1932 and 1938), but bounced back quickly each time. In the Fifties they spent two seasons in Division Three (North) before gaining promotion back to Second Division. After relegation in 1959, however, the club went into decline, and found themselves in the Fourth Division in 1965. They remained in the lower divisions until 1979 when former Leeds United star Allan Clarke led them to promotion. Two years later, another former Leeds star, Norman Hunter took the club back into the Second Division. Throughout the Eighties and Nineties, the Tykes remained a mid-table Second Division team. In 1997, however, they confounded everyone by winning promotion to the Premier League. Unfortunately, the step up in class proved too much, and they were relegated after just one season. In 2002, the club were relegated to Division Two, went into administration, and narrowly avoided dropping into the lowest division. In 2006, they regained their place in the second tier, via the playoffs. Their first two years back in the Championship were spent mainly fighting off relegation. However, they did enjoy a remarkable run in the 2008 F.A. Cup, beating Premier League giants Chelsea and Liverpool on route to the semi-finals, where they lost to Cardiff City.
