Best Everton Liverpool Games



The 'Friendly Derby' it may be, but it's still one of England's most fiercely contested games. Here are our 10 best Everton Liverpool games.


Everton 1-0 Liverpool
FA Cup - March, 1967

A big-screen was set up at Anfield to accommodate the 40, 000 Liverpool fans unable to get a match ticket. A further 60, 000 were inside Goodison to see an Alan Ball goal win it for the Toffees.

Everton went out to Notts Forest in the next round.


Liverpool 2-2 Everton
FA Cup Semi-Final - April, 1977

A contentious derby in which referee Clive Thomas denied Everton what looked like a legitimate last-minute winner.

Everton had already fought back twice with goals from Duncan McKenzie and Bruce Rioch canceling out strikes by Liverpool's McDermott and Case, when referee Thomas ruled out Bryan Hamilton's late strike.

Their mood will not have been improved by a 3-0 defeat in the replay.

Football League First Division - November, 1982

One Toffees fans will want to forget. Ian Rush made a habit of scoring against his boyhood heroes, and in this one he banged in four goals, as the Reds strolled to a 5-0 win over Everton at Goodison.


Liverpool 1-0 Everton
League Cup Final - March, 1984

One of the less exciting finals, it is nonetheless remembered for being Liverpool's fourth League Cup win in a row.

The first game, at Wembley finished 0-0, while in the replay, played at Maine Road, a Graeme Souness strike was enough to seal it for the Reds.


Liverpool 3-1 Everton
FA Cup Final - May, 1986

Having already beaten Everton to the league title, Liverpool completed their first ever 'Double' with this FA Cup final win.

Gary Lineker put Everton in front, but two second-half goals from Ian Rush and one from Craig Johnston gave Liverpool the win.


Everton 1-0 Liverpool
Football League First Division - March, 1988

A Liverpool team on their way to the title lost just two games during the 1987/88 season - but it would have irked them that those two defeats were against Everton and Manchester United.

A Wayne Clarke goal won this for Everton, in the process ending Liverpool's 29-match unbeaten run.


Liverpool 3-2 Everton
FA Cup Final - May, 1989

Played out against the sombre backdrop of the Hillsborough disaster when 96 Liverpool fans were killed during the semi-final against Nottingham Forest.

The teams produced an exciting, flowing game in which Liverpool took the lead through John Aldridge after just four minutes.

Everton substitute Stuart McCall snatched an equalizer in the last minute to take the game into extra-time, and a thrilling 30 minutes followed.

Ian Rush put Liverpool in front, before a second goal for McCall pulled Everton level once more.

It was left to Rush, the most prolific scorer in Merseyside derbies, to win it for Liverpool with a headed goal.


Everton 4-4 Liverpool
FA Cup Fifth Round - February, 1991

A roller-coaster of a game in which Everton came from behind four times to force a 4-4 draw.

Graeme Sharp and Tony Cottee got a brace each to answer strikes from Liverpool's Beardsley (2), Barnes and Rush.

Kenny Dalglish resigned as Liverpool manager a day later and Everton went on to win the replay 1-0.


Liverpool 0-1 Everton
Premier League, September, 1999

Campbell slotted the winner after just four minutes and the Toffees held on for a rare win at Anfield.

In a spiteful game, Liverpool's Sander Westerveld and Steven Gerrard, and Everton's Francis Jeffers were all sent off.


Liverpool 3-1 Everton
Premier League - March, 2006

Steve Gerrard's second red card in a Merseyside derby did little to disrupt Liverpool's momentum as they recorded a convincing win.

Gerrard was dismissed for a second yellow after just 20 minutes but a Phil Neville own goal, and goals from Luis Garcia and Harry Kewell won it at Anfield.

Tim Cahill scored Everton's consolation.
