League Cup Final - March, 1983

United took the lead through Norman Whiteside in the 12th minute, Liverpool replied through Alan Kennedy in the 75th as the game headed for extra-time. With a number of United players carrying knocks, Liverpool took control and Ronnie Whelan won it with a sublime curling effort.

FA Cup Semi-final - April, 1985

In a game played at the home of Liverpool's Merseyside rivals Everton, United thought they'd won it when Mark Hughes scored four minutes from time. But a late equalizer sent the game into extra-time.

Again United took the lead, this time through Frank Stapleton. Again Liverpool equalized, Paul Walsh getting them back in it. 2-2 it finished, but United had the last laugh, winning the replay 2-1 at Maine Road.

Football League Division 1 - April 1988

Liverpool were well on their way to racking up a 17th League title when United arrived at Anfield for this one. Bryan Robson put United in front but goals from Peter Beardsley, Gary Gillespie and Steve McMahon gave Liverpool a commanding lead.

Robson's second gave United hope and then Gordon Strachan completed their comeback with 12 minutes remaining.

Premier League - January, 1994

A cracking game saw United storm into a 3-0 lead through Steve Bruce, Ryan Giggs and Denis Irwin, but a Nigel Clough brace and a late header from Neil Ruddock gave Liverpool a share of the points.

Premier League - October 1995

Eric Cantona was making his long-awaited return, following his eight-month ban for violent conduct, and he showed not signs of ring-rust as he played in Nicky Butt for the opener after two minutes.

But Robbie Fowler then put Liverpool in front with two excellently taken goals before United won a 71st minute penalty. Up stepped Cantona to smash the ball home, as it ended honours even.

Premier League - April, 1997

In a exciting title run-in leaders United travelled to Anfield to face second placed Liverpool. Gary Pallister put United in front before John Barnes equalised for Liverpool to leave the game finely poised.

Then a second for Pallister, and a goal for Andy Cole - courtesy of a howler from Liverpool keeper David James - gave United the points.

'We won the league on Merseyside' sang the United fans - and they were right.

FA Cup Fourth Round - January, 1999

Michael Owen gave Liverpool the lead early on at Old Trafford and the Reds looked to have done enough as the game entered its closing stages.

Never write United off though - with two minutes remaining, Dwight Yorke levelled before Ole Gunnar Solskjaer got a late, late winner to send United through.

Premier League - May, 1999

Liverpool had an early chance to exact revenge for their FA Cup defeat. United were locked in a battle for the title with Arsenal, and how the Reds would have loved to have a hand in denying them.

United took the lead through Yorke in the first half and doubled it with an Irwin penalty on 56 minutes.

The drama was just beginning though, as Liverpool were awarded a controversial penalty which Jamie Redknapp duly dispatched.

Then after United had been reduced to ten men, their former captain, Paul Ince, equalized with a minute to go.

Premier League - December, 2000

Going into this one Liverpool had gone ten games without beating United, but a Danny Murphy free-kick two minutes before half-time gave them the lead and they held on for all three points.

Premier League - November 2001

Michael Owen gave Liverpool a 1-0 lead after 32 minutes before a cracker of a free-kick from John Arne Riise doubled their advantage seven minutes later. Beckham reduced the deficit on 50 minutes, but Owen's second, a minute later, sealed an emphatic Liverpool win.
