The best Manchester derbies, 10 memorable games between City and United.

Manchester United 4 Manchester City 1
Football League Division 1 - 31st August 1957

United kicked off the defence of their First Division title in style, as goals from Duncan Edwards, Tommy Taylor, Johnny Berry and Dennis Viollet gave them a convincing win.

Sadly, this would be the last Manchester derby for Roger Byrne, Eddie Colman, David Pegg, Liam Whelan, Edwards and Taylor who would all perish in the Munich Air Disaster, just five months later.

Football League Division 1 - 27th April 1974

United went into the game second from bottom, needing to win (and hope that results elsewhere went their way) in order to avoid relegation.

They lost 1-0, the goal famously scored by United legend Denis Law, who was substituted minutes later, ending his professional playing career.

It is commonly believed that Law's goal relegated United but, given other results, they would have gone down even if the match had ended in a draw.

Football League Division 1 - 23rd September 1989

In the late 80s United were nowhere near the force they are today, but this result still goes down as an upset.

Goals from Oldfield, Morley and Ian Bishop put City 3-0 up at half time, before a typically spectacular Mark Hughes goal gave the Red Devils hope.

Oldfield's second and a thundering Andy Hinchcliffe header put the game out of United's reach and sealed a fine City performance.

Football League Division 1 - 27th October 1990

A cracking derby saw City take a two goal lead through a David White brace. Mark Hughes pulled one back for United before Colin Hendry put City 3-1 up.

Then, with 10 minutes to go, McClair dispossessed Brightwell and raced clear to score. Moments later, McClair's second had United level.

Premier League - 7th November 1993

City stormed into a two-goal lead thanks to a first-half brace from Niall Quinn.

But United came back strongly in the second half as two goals from Eric Cantona, and a Roy Keane winner on 87th minutes, gave them all three points.

Premier League - 10th November 1994

United were on the way to retaining their Premiership crown while it was another season of struggle for City. And the gulf in class was clearly illustrated in this encounter.

Andrei Kanchelskis go a hat-trick, while Cantona and Mark Hughes got one each in this emphatic United win.

Premier League, 9th November 2002

In the last derby played at Maine Road, Nicolas Anelka gave City a 5th minute lead before Ole Gunnar Solskjaer got United level three minutes later.

Then Gary Neville, while attempting to shepherd the ball out of play for a goal-kick, was dispossessed by Shaun Goater, who raced through to score City's second.

Five minutes into the second-half another Goater goal sealed the win.

FA Cup Fifth Round, 14th February 2004

Gary Neville got an early red card for head-butting Steve McManaman, but United still won at a canter.

Paul Scholes put The Red Devils ahead before two goals from van Nistelrooy, and one from Ronaldo put United in the hat for the last 16 draw.

Michael Tarnat and Robbie Fowler got City's consolation goals, while their 30-year wait for a win at Old Trafford continued.

Manchester United 4 Manchester City 3
Premier League - 20th September 2009

With City's new found wealth and some of the talk coming out of Eastlands this was one of the most eagerly anticipated derbies of recent times - and it didn't disappoint.

Three times United led through, first, Rooney and then two from Fletcher, three times they were pegged back by City - Barry and Bellamy (2) getting their goals.

A roller-coaster of a game ebbed and flowed and entered full-time locked at 3-3 but there was one final twist as Michael Owen slotted an injury-time winner.

Premier League - 20th September 2010

It couldn't happen again, surely - except that it did!

The return fixture was nowhere near as attractive as the previous game at Old Trafford, but it was still a tense affair - with United needing to win to keep the pressure on league leaders, Chelsea.

Once again the game entered stoppage time deadlocked - 0-0 this time - and once again United got at late, late winner. This time through Paul Scholes.
