Black Day for Reds
by TheRumor Monger
Just when Liverpool fans thought it couldn't possibly get any worse along comes a result like this. Little Blackpool, recently thumped 4-0 and 6-0 by Chelsea and Arsenal respectively, went to Anfield and came away with a famous 2-1 win to dump their illustrious opponents into the relegation zone. The Seasiders took the lead on 29 minutes after Glen Johnson brought down Luke Varney in the box. Up stepped captain Charlie Adam to fire home past Reina. Then on the stroke of half time, life-long Liverpool fan Gary Taylor-Fletcher flicked a ball into the penalty area for Varney to score Blackpool's second. 2-0 at the break, as Liverpool's players left the field to a chorus of boos. The home side were thrown a life-line on 53 minutes, when Sotirios Kyrgiakos headed home a Steven Gerrard's free-kick but, despite late pressure, Blackpool held on for a deserved three points. To make matters worse for Liverpool, Fernando Torres limped out of the game after less than 10 minutes with what looked like a groin injury. At the end there were chants of 'Dalglish', from the Kop, and manager Roy Hodgson must be fearing for his future after just 3 months in the job. Elsewhere on Sunday, goals by Didier Drogba and Alex saw Chelsea power past Arsenal, while Man City climbed to second after a somewhat fortuitous 2-1 win over Newcastle. |
