Football History

Brentford FC was founded in 1889 by members of the local rowing club.

They joined the Southern League in 1898, and a year later they turned professional.

Move to Griffin Park

In 1904 they moved into their present home, Griffin Park.

After 12 modest seasons in the Southern League First Division, they were relegated to Division Two in 1912.

Founder Members of Division Three

After World War One, the club was elected to a reconstituted Southern League Division One and, as a result, they became founder members of the Football League Division Three in 1920.

They were forced to seek re-election after their first season but thereafter established themselves as a mid-table side.

The early Thirties saw an improvement in their form and in 1933 they were Third Division (South) champions.

Promoted to Division One

In 1935 the "Bees" won the Second Division championship and were promoted to Division One.

Expected to struggle, they confounded their critics by finishing fifth in their first season and following that up with consecutive sixth place finishes.

Promotion & Relegation

However, after the Second World War, the club could not regain their form and they were relegated to Division Two in 1947, and to the Third Division (South) in 1954.

Worse followed in 1960 when they were relegated to the Fourth Division.

Brentford were Fourth Division champions the following season but for the rest of the decade and throughout the Seventies they moved between the two lower divisions.

During the 1980s they enjoyed a settled spell in the Third Division, but in 1992 they won the Third Division and promotion to the renamed Division One (old Second Division).

They lasted for only one season at this level, returning to Division Two (old Third Division) in 1993.

Relegated again in 1998, they bounced straight back, only to drop into the fourth tier again in 2007.

League Two Champions

In 2009 the Bees were League Two champions and were promoted to League One.
