Bristol South End FC was founded in 1894. Three years later, the club turned professional and joined the Southern League, changing their name to Bristol City in the process.
In 1900, they merged with Bedminster FC, and in 1901, they successfully applied to join the Football League, replacing Walsall.
City were promoted to the First Division in 1906, and the following year they narrowly missed out on the League title - finishing three points behind champions Newcastle United.
In 1909, they reached the FA Cup Final only to lose to Manchester United 1-0. Two years later, they were relegated and would not return to the top flight for 66 years.
In 1922, City were relegated to Division Three (South). They returned to Division Two the following season, but were immediately relegated again. A further promotion followed in 1928, but they went down again in 1932. It would be 1955 before they were promoted again, this time spending five years in the Second Division before being relegated once more.
In 1965, City were promoted again and this time they succeeded in consolidating their position in Division Two.
In 1976, City finished as Division Two runners-up and were promoted to the First Division. Predictably they struggled at the higher level, although they managed to survive until 1980. Successive relegations followed, leaving them in the Fourth Division, and close to bankruptcy by 1983.
In 1984, The Robins began the long climb back up the leagues, and by the early Nineties, they were back in the Second Division. They were relegated in 1996, promoted in 1998, and relegated again in 2000. In 2007 they gained promotion to the second tier (The Championship) once more. A year later the made the play-off final, but lost 1-0 to Hull City.
