![]() Bury Football Club were founded after a public meeting held at the White Horse Hotel in 1885. Election to the Football LeagueThey became founder members of the Lancashire League in 1889, and played in that league until 1894 when they were accepted into the Football League Second Division. Promotion to Division OneIn their first season they won promotion to the top flight after beating Liverpool in a test match. FA Cup Winners (Twice!)In 1900 they won the FA Cup, beating Southampton, and they won the cup again in 1903, this time defeating Derby County 6-0, still a record score for a final. In 1912, the club were relegated and remained in the Second Division until promotion in 1924. This time they stayed in Division One for five years, achieving their highest ever finish, fourth, in 1926. Down the DivisionsAfter relegation, the Shakers spent the next twenty-six years in Division Two, before dropping to Division Three (North) in 1957. They remained for one season before being placed in Division Three when the regional divisions were scrapped in 1958. Division Three ChampionsIn 1961, they were Division Three champions and returned to the Second division, where they stayed for six years. Relegated to Division Three in 1967, they were back after only one season, but they were again relegated immediately and in 1971 they dropped into Division Four. They were promoted again in 1974 spending six years in the Third Division before relegation in 1980, and this pattern would repeat itself several times before successive promotions in 1996 and 1997 saw them climb to Division One (the old Second Division). In 1999 they were relegated on goal difference and by 2002 they were back in the fourth tier. They qualified for the playoffs in 2009, but lost to Shrewsbury Town.
