On a night of shocks in the Carling Cup, Northampton caused the biggest sensation, coming from behind to record a famous victory over Liverpool at Anfield The Cobblers won 4-2 on penalties, after it finished in a 2-2 draw at the end of extra-time, to dump the seven-time winners out of the competition. At Stamford Bridge, Chelsea fielded a second-string side and paid the price as Shola Ameobi's late goal earned Newcastle a dramatic 4-3 win, and condemned the Blues to their first competitive defeat of the season. Elsewhere, West Brom came from behind to beat big-spending Manchester City 2-1 at The Hawthorns. There was no shock at Glanford Park, but holders Manchester United had to came from behind to overcome a brave Scunthorpe side 5-2. Gerard Houllier got his Aston Villa career off to a winning start as his side beat Blackburn 3-1 at Villa Park, with Emile Heskey the unlikely hero. Heskey came off the bench to equalize before a quick-fire brace from Ashley Young sent Villa through to the fourth round. Meanwhile, a late Charles N'Zogbia's goal saw Wigan to a 2-1 win over Preston at the DW Stadium.
