Arsenal drew first blood at White Hart Lane with Henri Lansbury scoring on 15 minutes, but substitute Robbie Keane drew Spurs level early in the second half.

With no further goals in the 90, the match headed for extra time where a brace of penalties by Samir Nasri, and a Andrey Arshavin goal, gave the Gunners a convincing victory.

Owen Coyle endured a dismal return to former club Burnley, where he was given a venomous reception by the home support, while on the pitch Wade Elliott's goal sent Bolton crashing to a 1-0 defeat.

Meanwhile, Everton's miserable start to the season continued as they were embarrassed by League One outfit Brentford. The scores were tied at 1-1 after extra time but the Bees went through 4-3 on penalties.

Wolves were also taken to extra time after it ended 1-1 against Notts County. A Kevin Doyle brace in the extra period saw the Molineux side to a 4-2 win.

West Ham recorded a rare victory, with new-boy Victor Obinna scoring the winner in a 2-1 win over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

Danny Higginbotham was on target for Stoke in the first half as they dumped Fulham out of the cup with a 2-0 win at the Britannia.

New signing Scott Sinclair got a hat-trick as Swansea disposed of League One Peterborough at London Road.
