Football History

Carlisle United was founded as Shaddongate AFC in 1903, changing their name to the current form a year later.

Move to Brunton Park

In 1905, Carlisle joined the Lancashire Combination and played at various grounds until they moved to Brunton Park in September 1909.

Also at this time they left the Lancashire Combination to join the North Eastern League.

Elected to the Football League

Carlisle won the North Eastern League championship in 1922 and, after a good FA Cup run in 1928, they were elected to the Football League, where they settled in as a solid mid-table side.

The club were placed in Division Four following the re-organisation of the league in 1958, and in 1962 won their first ever promotion, although they were relegated the following season.

Promotion to Division One

In 1963, Alan Ashman was appointed manager, and secured two successive championships (1964 and 1965) before winning promotion to Division One in 1974.

Carlisle briefly topped the League in August but, as expected, they were unable to compete at the highest level and they were relegated at the end of the season.

Ups and Downs

Two years later they were relegated to the Third Division but the appointment of Bob Stokoe triggered something of a revival -they were back in Division Two in 1982 and within a whisker of promotion to Division One in 1984.

Decline followed and, in 1987, Carlisle were back in the Fourth Division and struggling to avoid relegation to the Conference. In 1992, they finished bottom of the league only to be reprieved when Aldershot resigned.

Three years later they were Division Three champions but they were relegated in controversial circumstances in 1996.

They bounced back to Division Two again in 1997, and true to form were relegated again in 1998.

Last Day Drama

In 1999, Carlisle avoided relegation to the Conference in remarkable fashion. Needing to win, and with the scores locked at 1-1, on-loan keeper Jimmy Glass came up for a corner and struck the winning goal five minutes into injury time.

Relegated to the Conference

This however proved a temporary reprieve and after struggling to avoid the drop for another five seasons, Carlisle eventually dropped into the Conference in 2004.

Back in the League

They returned to the League via the play-offs the following season and were League Two Champions in 2006.

In 2008, they qualified for play-offs but were beaten by Leeds United.
