Carrow Road![]() ![]()
Carrow Road was opened in 1935 after Norwich City moved from their dilapidated previous ground, The Nest. It became the third home ground to the club since their inception in 1902. The current stadium consists of four stands; the Barclay End, the Norwich and Peterborough Stand, the Geoffrey Watling City Stand, the Jarrold Stand. The Norwich and Peterborough Stand was completed in 1979 at a cost of 1.7 million pounds. It replaced the old 'River End' and was named due to a sponsorship deal with the Norwich & Peterborough building society. The Geoffrey Watling City Stand was built following a fire which destroyed its predecessor in October 1984. It is the smallest of the four stands, but comprises the Directors' Box, Press Area, and various other hospitality suites. The stand was renamed in honour of Norwich City president Geoffrey Watling, who died in 2004. The old Barclay End was demolished in 1992 and was replaced by a new two-tier structure at a cost of 2.8 million pounds. The stand is named after Captain Evelyn Barclay, a former vice-president of the club. The corner where the Barclay End meets the Geoffrey Watling City Stand is dubbed 'The Snakepit' by Norwich supporters. Construction of the Jarrold Stand, sponsored by a local department store, was completed in January 2004. It is a cantilever, single-tiered, all-seated stand, and can hold up to 8,000 supporters. Unusually, the corner between the Barclay End and the Jarrold Stand has been filled in with a Holiday Inn hotel, and customers with pitch-facing rooms are able to watch matches.
