Champions League Round-up, Tuesday 2 November
by Rumours
A fortnight after losing 4-3 in Milan, Spurs got their revenge with an impressive 3-1 win over Inter at White Hart Lane. Rafael van der Vaart opened the scoring for Tottenham as early as the 18th minute and Spurs increased their lead on the hour through Peter Crouch. Inter pulled a goal back with 10 minutes to go but substitute Roman Pavlyuchenko settled the tie after excellent work from man-of-the-match Gareth Bale. Dutch champions Twente kept their qualification hopes alive hopes alive with a 2-0 away win over Werder Bremen. Bremen had Torsten Frings sent off after 75-minutes and the Dutch champions took full advantage, with late goals from Nacer Chadli and Luuk de Jong. Manchester United produced a professional performance in Turkey to see off Bursaspor 3-0. After a goal-less first half Darren Fletcher, Gabriel Obertan and Bebe scored to put United in control of Group C. No such luck for Rangers who went down to a comprehensive 3-0 defeat against Valencia at the Mestalla. The Gers now drop to third place in the group and have it all to do. In Group D former champions Barcelona looked far from impressive as they were held 1-1 by FC Copenhagen. Lionel Messi gave Barca the lead on 31 minutes, but Claudemir equalised for Copenhagen just two minutes later, after poor goalkeeping from Victor Valdes. Elsewhere in Group D Rubin Kazan and Panathinaikos played out a dull 0-0 draw. The game of the night was in Lisbon where Benfica withstood a late rally from Lyon to claim a thrilling 4-3 win in Group B. Benfica took the lead on 20 minutes through Alan Kardecand, and doubled it on 31 minutes when Fabio Coentrao volleyed home. And the tie looked to be over just eight minutes later as Javi Garcia headed a third. Coentrao put the Portuguese side four up midway through the second half, before Yoann Gourcuff scored for Lyon 15 minutes from time. Late goals from Bafetimbi Gomis and Dejan Lovren had the home support sweating, but Benifica held on for the win. The group's other fixture saw Schalke retain second spot despite being held to a 0-0 draw away to Hapoel Tel Aviv.
