![]() Cheltenham Town FC were founded in 1887, but they played in local leagues until 1932 when they turned professional and joined the Birmingham Combination. 50 Years in the Southern LeagueThree years later they joined the Southern League, where they would remain for the next 50 years. In the mid-1950s the Robins achieved six consecutive top six league placings and won the Southern League Cup in 1958. They dropped into the second tier of the Southern League in 1969 and remained there until promoted in 1977. When the Alliance Premier League (forerunner of the Conference) was founded in 1979, Cheltenham narrowly failed to qualify. Promotion to the ConferenceThey remained in the Southern League until 1985 when they gained promotion to the Conference, remaining there until relegated back to the Southern League in 1992. Conference ChampionsThey gained promotion back to the Conference in 1997, and two years later won the Conference title to take their place in the Football League for the first time. In 2002, the Robins won promotion to Division Two via the play-offs, but they were relegated at the end of the season. They achieved promotion in 2005, but were again relegated to League Two in 2009.
