![]() An Inauspicious StartChesterfield FC was founded in 1866, but the original club got into financial difficulties in 1881, and was wound up. The club was re-formed in 1884, and joined the Sheffield League in 1891, winning the title at the first attempt. In (and Out) of the LeagueIn 1897, they joined the Midland League, and in 1899 they applied successfully for admission to the Football League. They remained in Football League Division Two until 1908 when they applied for re-election for the fourth season in a row and were voted out. Chesterfield "Municipals" FCThe club rejoined the Midland League, but financial problems resulted in the club being rescued by the local borough council and, for the 1920-21 season, they played under the name Chesterfield Municipal FC. In 1921, having dropped "Municipal" from their name, Chesterfield FC were elected to the new Division Three (North). They won Division Three (North) in 1931 to return to the Second Division. However, they lasted only two seasons before relegation. In 1936,they won promotion for the second time and this time remained until 1951. Ten years later they dropped into the Fourth Division and throughout the Sixties they struggled, narrowly avoiding having to seek re-election on two occasions. Fourth Division Champions1970 brought the Fourth Division title and ushered in 13 years of relative stability until relegation again in 1983. The Fourth Division title was won again in 1985, but in 1989 the club was back in Division Four and facing mounting financial problems. Despite these problems they won promotion via the play-offs in 1995. FA Cup SensationsIn 1997 the "Spireites" created a national sensation by reaching the FA Cup semi-finals, where they took Middlesbrough to a replay after surrendering a 2-0 lead in the first match. Unfortunately their cup exploits did not translate to league form and, in 1999, they were relegated again. They achieved promotion again in 2000-01 despite a nine point penalty (incurred after an FA investigation into the affairs of club chairman Darren Brown). Saved by the SupportersBrown left the club with huge debts, and the club was only saved by the Chesterfield Football Supporters Society, which raised 30,000 pounds in subscriptions, and took over control. The club was relegated to League Two (old Fourth Division) in 2007. Click on the icons below for more on Chesterfield FC;
