Layer Road was the home ground of Colchester United from 1937 until 2008, when the club moved to the new 10, 000 seater Colchester Community Stadium.

The new stadium was officially opened on 4 August 2008 with a friendly match against Athletic Bilbao, which Colchester lost 2-1.

The first competitive match was a 0-0 draw with Huddersfield Town in Football League One.
