![]() Coventry City FC were founded in 1883 by employees of Singers, a bicycle manufacturer. Move to Highfield RoadIn 1898 Singers FC changed their name to Coventry City and a year later moved to Highfield Road, which would be their home for the next 105 years. They were elected to the Southern League in 1908, and to the Football League Division Two in 1919. Early StruggleTheir early years were a constant struggle against relegation, and finally, in 1925, they were relegated to Division Three (North). A year later they were transferred to Division Three (South) where they remained until promotion in 1936. In 1952, City were relegated back to Division Three (South) and in 1958 they were placed in Division Four when the regional divisions were scrapped. The Jimmy Hill RevivalIn November 1961, Jimmy Hill was appointed manager and set about a major reorganisation of the club, including the modernisation of Highfield Road, and a change to a new sky blue strip. There was success on the pitch too, with the club winning the Third Division championship in 1964 and the Division Two title in 1967. SurvivalHill left before the start of their first ever campaign in Division One, leading many pundits to predict a swift return to Division Two. But the Sky Blues proved them wrong, surviving relegation scraps year after year. FA Cup WinnersThe reached the FA Cup final in 1987, and came from behind to beat favourites Spurs and lift the cup, the club’s only major trophy to date. In 2001, City were finally relegated after a 34 year run in the top flight, an unbroken run which very few teams can match. Move to the Ricoh ArenaIn 2005, they left Highfield Road and moved to the purpose built, 32 500 seater Ricoh Arena. Click on the icons below for more on Coventry City FC;
