Donald Simpson Bell

by Malcolm Webb
(Burnopfield, Newcastle-upon-Tyne)

Only professional footballer to be awarded the Victoria Cross in World War 1 (Battle of the Somme 1916)-awarded for conspicuous bravery. Played for NUFC as an amateur before going to Bradford Park Avenue as a professional.
Donald Simpson Bell has an entry on Wilkipedia but I feel he should have official recognition from NUFC.
