Everton

The club was originally called St Domingo FC before changing their name in November 1879. By 1880 they were attracting crowds of over 2,000.

In 1884 they moved to a ground Priory Road, and shortly thereafter they were on the move again, this time to Anfield Road.

In 1887 the club entered the FA Cup for the first time and in 1888 they were invited to join the new Football League.

In 1891 they won their first League Championship.

In 1892, when their landlord decided to double the annual rent on their Anfield ground, the club decided to move instead to a piece of vacant land north of Stanley Park. Here the first purpose-built football stadium in England, Goodison Park, was soon constructed.

Meanwhile, a new club, Liverpool FC, was formed to play at the now vacant Anfield.

Everton were beaten FA Cup finalists in 1893 and 1897, and finally landed the coveted trophy in 1906. The following year they were beaten finalists again. In 1914-15, they won the League title for the second time.

Dixie Dean was signed in 1925 and,in 1927-28, helped the club to their third League title by scoring 60 goals in 39 matches, a record that is unlikely to ever be beaten.

After that triumph, the Toffees were inexplicably relegated in 1930, promoted as Division Two Champions in 1931, and were League Champions again in 1932. In 1933, they won the FA Cup again and in 1939 a fifth League championship.

The immediate post-war period proved a difficult one. The club were relegated in 1951 and although promoted again in 1954, the rest of the decade was a barren period.

Harry Catterick arrived as manager in 1961, and led the club to fourth position in 1962. They were champions in 1963 and in 1966 won the FA Cup. They were beaten in the FA Cup final in 1968 but in 1970, won the League championship once again. The rest of the Seventies were however a fallow period for Everton.

In May 1981, former player Howard Kendall was appointed manager. Under his leadership, the Blues won the FA Cup in 1984, and the League and European Cup Winners Cup in 1985.

The club were defeated FA Cup finalists in 1985 and 1986, and won the League again in 1987.

A fifth FA Cup was won in 1995.
