Exeter City FC were formed out of the merger of Exeter United and St. Sidwell’s United in 1904. The new club took over Exeter United’s home ground St James Park, and played their first competitive match on 10 September 1904 – a 2-1 victory over 110th Battery.
City won the East Devon League that year and transferred to the Plymouth & District League.
In 1908, the club turned professional, and applied successfully for membership of the Southern League, replacing Tottenham Hotspur.
In 1920, they were invited to join the Football League as founder members of Division Three.
City were Division Three South runners-up in 1932-33, but they remained in that league until placed in Division Four following the reorganisation of the League in 1958-59.
They managed to gain promotion in 1963-64, but relegation followed after just two seasons at the higher level.
They were Division Four runner-up again in 1976-77 and this time managed to gain a foothold in the Third Division. They finished 8th and 9th in consecutive seasons during the early eighties and remained in the division until relegation in 1984.
1989-1990 brought the club's greatest triumph as they were Fourth Division Champions.
However, they struggled at the higher level and were eventually relegated again in 1994, their cause made more difficult by the club being forced into administration and by the sale of their home ground.
With so much off field discord, it was perhaps inevitable that the club was relegated to the Conference in 2003.
Following relegation, the club was taken over by the Exeter City Supporters Trust, who kept the club going through various fund-raising activities.
City finished fifth place 2006/07, but lost out to Morecambe in the play-off final. The following year they were back at Wembley, beating Cambridge United to regain their league status.
