FA Cup Final ShocksThe biggest FA Cup Final shocks in history.
Portsmouth 4-1 Wolves (1939) Portsmouth had spent the season battling relegation, while the rampant Wolves side had scored 19 goals en route to the final. A convincing Wolves win was expected but it was Portsmouth who handed out the hiding with two goals from Cliff Parker and one each from Bert Barlow and John Anderson. Due to the outbreak of World War II, the tournament was not played again until 1946, meaning Pompey held on to the Cup for seven years. Sunderland 1-0 Leeds (1973) Arguably the biggest FA Cup Final shock in the history of the competition. Sunderland had narrowly avoided relegation to the Third Division and were up against Don Revie's all-conquering Leeds team. The underdogs took a surprise lead through Ian Porterfield on 31 minutes and then resisted everything Leeds threw at them for the remainder of the game. Jimmy Montgomery in the Sunderland goal was particularly inspired - producing a spectacular double save from first Trevor Cherry, and then Peter Lorimer, to preserve his team's lead. Southampton 1-0 Manchester United (1976) Southampton were a Second Division when they faced United in the 1973 final. A late strike from Bobby Stokes was enough to give the Saints their first ever trophy. Southampton goalkeeper Ian Turner was also outstanding, with a series of impressive saves to deny Gerry Daly and Gordon Hill. West Ham 1-0 Arsenal (1980) Arsenal dominated the game but it was Second Division West Ham who went home with the cup, as a rare headed goal from Trevor Brooking produced an FA Cup final shock, and the last time the Cup has been won by a club from outside the top division. Coventry City 3-2 Tottenham Hotspur (1988) Coventry had, in fact, finished above Tottenham in the league table, but with Spurs cup pedigree - they'd never lost a final - they were widely tipped to win. The highlight of the match was Keith Houchen's stunning equalizer before the unfortunate Gary Mabbutt put through his own goal to hand Coventry their first major trophy. Wimbledon 1-0 Liverpool 0 (1988) Newly-crowned league champions Liverpool, were looking to complete the double when they came up against the Wimbledon 'Crazy Gang' in this final. Lawrie Sanchez gave the Dons a shock lead just before half-time and Dave Beasant saved a John Aldridge penalty - the first time a penalty had been saved in the history of the Cup final. Everton 1-0 Manchester United (1995) United had lost out to Blackburn in the title race and were looking to the FA Cup for consolation. Everton had narrowly escaped relegation. The match was won by a combination of Paul Rideout's headed goal, and an outstanding performance from Everton keeper Neville Southall, under massive United pressure. No club from outside the 'Big Four (Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United), would win the Cup for another 13 years.
