Grimsby Pelham FC

Grimsby Town FC was founded in 1878, under the name Grimsby Pelham FC, changing their name to the current form the following year.

In 1890, the club turned professional and played in the Football Alliance until 1892 when the Alliance was incorporated into the Football League as Division Two.

Promotion to Division One

Grimsby won the Second Division title in 1901, and survived two seasons in the top flight before relegation in 1903.

Voted out of the League (twice!)

At the end of the 1909-10 season, they had to apply for re-election and were voted out of the league.

After one season in the Midland League, Grimsby were elected back into the Football League.

In 1920 they finished bottom of Division Two and were voted out for the second time, only to be reprieved due to the creation of the new Third Division.

When the League was expanded further a year later, Grimsby transferred to Division Three (North).

Back in the Top-flight

In 1926, the Mariners won the division and with it promotion to the Second Division. Three years later they were promoted back to the First Division, where (1932/33 and 1933/34 aside) they remained until 1948.

Decline

Relegation from the First Division in 1948 triggered a steep decline and, in 1955, they had to apply for re-election to Third Division (North).

The following season they were promoted back to Division Two as champions, and spent four seasons at this level.

Grimsby returned to Division Two in 1962, but another crash followed and in 1969 they were once again forced to seek re-election.

Successive Promotions

1972 brought the Fourth Division championship but they were relegated again in 1977 before successive promotions (1979 and 1980) took them back to Division Two.

Then in 1987 and 1988 they were relegated back to the Fourth Division.

Remarkably, Grimsby achieved successive promotions again in 1990 and 1991.

In 1997 they were relegated from Division One (old Second Division) but secured promotion via the play-offs the following season.

True to form they were relegated in successive seasons (2003 and 2004) to fall to the bottom tier again.

In 2008 Grimsby reached the final of the Football League Trophy, but were beaten 2-0 by M K Dons, at Wembley.

Relegation to the Conference

In 2009/2010 Grimsby were relegated from the Football League for the first time in nearly 100 years.
