Home Park was originally used by a local rugby team Plymouth Albion, but they abandoned the ground following a dispute with the owners, and the ground stood empty until 1901 when Plymouth Argyle took up residence.

The ground originally had a seating capacity of just 2, 000 but significant improvements were made after Argyle were admitted to the Football League in 1920.

During the Second World War the stadium was all but destroyed during bombing raids, and several makeshift repairs were carried out in order to be ready for the resumption of league football in 1945.

In 1952 a new grandstand was completed and floodlights were installed in the mid 1950's.

The ground remained relatively unchanged until the 1990's when plans were announced for an 18,500 capacity all-seater stadium, to be built in two phases.

Phase 1 of the project, the redevelopment of the Devonport, Lyndhurst and Barn Park stands, was completed in February 2002.

After further work the stadium became all-seated in the summer of 2007.
