Huddersfield Town FC was founded in 1908.

They played in the North Eastern League during their first season but switched to the Midland League the following year, in order to reduce travelling costs.

Financial Problems

In 1910, the club applied successfully to join the Football League Second Division but in 1912 Huddersfield went into liquidation.

A new company was immediately formed to take over the club's assets but they fared little better and, by 1919 the club was 25,000 pounds in debt.

Proposed Merger with Leeds

In 1919 Huddersfield chairman, J Hilton Crowther, announced plans to merge the club with the newly formed Leeds United, but such was the outcry that Crowther was offered a financial settlement and ousted as chairman.

These events seemed to galvanise the team and, by the end of the season, Huddersfield had reached the FA Cup final and had won promotion to the First Division.

Herbert Chapman and the Golden Era

1921 saw the appointment of Herbert Chapman and the club now embarked on a period of incredible success, winning the FA Cup in 1922 and then consecutive League titles in 1924, 1925 and 1926. Chapman left to join Arsenal after the 1925 title and would go on to repeat his extraordinary achievements there.

Huddersfield were league runners-up in 1927 and 1928 and remained a strong First Division side until the outbreak of the Second World War, but after the war, they began to struggle.

They spent one season in the Second Division (1952-53) but bounced back immediately. They were relegated again in 1956 and this time spent 14 seasons in Division Two.

Decline

In 1969-70 Huddersfield enjoyed a brief return to Division One, but that was followed by a catastrophic decline which saw them in the Fourth Division by 1975.

In 1980, they were Fourth Division champions and three seasons later they were promoted back to the Second Division.

In 1988, they dropped down to Division Two (old Third Division), and in 1995 they returned to Division One, the second tier of English football.

Move to a New Stadium

In 1992, planning permission was granted for a new stadium and in May 1994 Huddersfield moved into the new McAlpine stadium. The following season they were promoted back to Division One.

They were relegated to Division Two in 2001, and despite reaching the play-offs the following season, they then suffered relegation to Division Three in 2003.

The following season (2003-04) they were promoted again and in 2006 they made the play-offs but failed to gain promotion.

The Terriers made the play-offs again in 2009/10 but failed to progress after defeat by Millwall.
