![]() Ipswich Town FC were founded in 1878, but remained staunchly amateur until 1936 when the decision was finally made to turn professional and join the Southern League. After winning that League at the first attempt, the club applied to join the Football League but were rejected. Election to the Football LeagueThe following year they tried again, and this time were elected to Division Three (South). In 1954, Ipswich were promoted to Division Two but the following season they were relegated again. Alf Ramsey AppointedAlf Ramsey was appointed manager in 1955 and led the club back into Division Two in 1957. Then, in 1961, Ipswich won the Division Two title. League ChampionsExpected to struggle in the top flight, Ipswich amazed everyone by winning the First Division title at the first attempt. After Ramsey’s departure to become England Manager, Ipswich were relegated in 1964 and spent four years in the lower division before winning the Second Division title in 1968. Cup Triumphs under Bobby RobsonBobby Robson arrived and, under his management, Ipswich finished in the top six nine times between 1973 and 1983, finishing as runners up in 1981 and 1982. In 1978, they won the FA Cup, and in 1981 the UEFA Cup. In 1982 Robson left the club to become England coach and, by 1986, Ipswich were back in Division Two. In 1992, Ipswich won a third Second Division title and promotion to the Premier League. However, after three difficult seasons, they were relegated in 1995. Between 1997 and 2000 they reached the play-offs four times and, at the fourth time of asking, they returned to the top flight in 2000. Premier League Ups and DownsThe following season brought European qualification via a highly creditable fifth place finish.
