Great Late Goals

10 of the greatest late goals and last gasp winners in the history of the game.

Michael Thomas (Football League Division 1, 1989)
Liverpool 0 Arsenal 2

Arguably the greatest ending to a match, certainly the most dramatic climax to a season in history. Arsenal needed a 2 goal victory at Anfield to win the title.

Alan Smith had given them the lead but with the final whistle imminent the title was still Liverpool's. Then, a punt upfield was headed on by Smith to Michael Thomas, and the midfielder lobbed the advancing Grobbelaar to win it for Arsenal.

Stan Collymore (Premier League, 1996)
Liverpool 4 Newcastle United 3

Often ranked as the greatest match in Premier League history, this 7 goal thriller was decided by a cracking late goal.

With the sides locked at 3-3 Stan Collymore received a John Barnes pass and beat Pavel Srnicek at his near post with a thunderous drive.

The defeat put the skids under Newcastle’s title challenge and Collymore would never score a better goal in Liverpool colours.

Jamie Hewitt (FA Cup Semi-Final, 1997)
Middlesborough 3 Chesterfield 3

No team from the Third Division has ever reached the FA Cup final, but Chesterfield went oh, so close in 1997.

Middlesborough, were leading 3-2, and the Spireites had had a perfectly good goal ruled out by referee David Elleray. With their last attack of the match Chris Beaumont hoisted the ball into the Boro area and Jamie Hewitt got up highest to head a last gasp equaliser.

The replay was a more straight-forward affair - with Middlesbrough progressing.

Jimmy Glass (Third Division, 1999)
Carlisle United 2 Plymouth Argyle 1

Jimmy Glass will forever be a part of Carlisle legend after saving the club from relegation to the Conference in 1999.

Carlisle needed a win on the final day to stay up, but with 90 minutes on the clock the score was 1-1 when they won a corner. On-loan keeper Glass went up for the corner kick and smashed the ball home to win in for Carlisle, meaning Scarborough were relegated instead.

Teddy Sheringham & Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (Champions League Final, 1999)
Manchester Utd 2 Bayern Munich 1

Bayern had been the better side in a tepid match, and held a one goal advantage as the game entered stoppage time.

Then Sheringham headed in a Beckham corner to equalize and while the Germans were still cursing their luck Solskjaer scored a second late goal, also from a corner. As Sir Alex Ferguson so eloquently put it "Football. Bloody hell!".

Jon Macken (FA Cup Fourth Round Replay, 2004)
Tottenham Hotspur 3 Manchester City 4

Spurs were three up, at home, and playing against ten men but somehow contrived to lose this one.

Distin, Bosvelt and Shaun Wright-Phillips got a goal each to level the scores at 3-3.

But it was left to Macken to deliver the coup de grace, heading past Kasey Keller with virtually the last touch of the game.

Massimo Maccarone (UEFA Cup Semi-Final, 2006)
Middlesbrough 4 Steaua Bucharest 2

Already trailing 1-0 from the away leg, Steve McLaren's side conceded two early goals to see Steaua take a commanding lead at the Riverside.

Maccarone pulled one back before half-time and when Mark Viduka and Chris Riggott got on the score-sheet after the interval the tie was finely balanced - although Boro were still going out on away goals.

With the clock ticking down Maccarone scored his second and his team's fourth, as Boro progressed to the final.

Steven Gerrard (FA Cup Final, 2006)
Liverpool 3 West Ham United 3

Liverpool were 2-0 down within the first half hour, but had fought back to level the scores when Paul Konchesky's miss-hit cross put West Ham in front again.

The game entered injury time with the Hammers still leading when the ball fell to Gerrard some 37 yards out. The midfielder unleashed a scorching shot which flew past Hislop to take the game into extra-time.

With no further score the match went to penalties with Liverpool winning the shoot-out 3-1.

Dimitar Berbatov and Paul Stalteri (2007)
West Ham United 3 Tottenham Hotspur 4

Relegation threatened West Ham looked to have secured three badly needed points when Bobby Zamora headed them 3-2 in front late on.

But Spurs striker Berbatov curled in a quite brilliant free-kick to draw his side level, and with the Hammers pushing forward looking to restore their advantage, Stalteri delivered the sucker-punch with a late goal to win it.

Didier Drogba (FA Cup Final, 2007)
Chelsea 1 Manchester United 0

The FA Cup final returned to Wembley for the first time in seven years, and the FA had their dream billing with the two best teams in the land facing off against each other.

However, the game failed to live up to the hype and looked to be heading for a penalty shoot-out before Drogba played a one-two with Lampard on the edge of the box and then prodded the ball past the onrushing Edwin van der Sar to win it for the Blues.
