Football History

Lincoln City Football Club was founded at a public meeting in the summer of 1884.

In 1888, City were founder members of the Combination, but when that league folded they joined the Midland League and then the Football Alliance in 1891.

Applying for Re-election (6 times!)

In 1892, the Alliance was incorporated into the Football League as Division Two, but City were out of their depth at this level and had to apply for re-election no fewer than six times between 1893 and 1908.

Voted Out

On the last occasion, they were voted out and rejoined the Midland League for one season, before being voted back into Division Two.

In 1911, Lincoln again lost their league status before regaining it after a season in the Midland League.

They survived another re-election in 1914, but lost their league place for a third time in 1920.

In 1921, the club were invited to join the new Third Division (North). They would spent the next thirty years at this level (bar two brief spells in the Second Division in 1932-34 and 1948-49).

Successive Relegations

After promotion in 1952 they spent nine years in the Second Division but successive relegations took the club down to the Fourth Division in 1962.

Between 1963 and 1971, the club had to apply for re-election five times.

League Records

In 1975, a young Graham Taylor arrived and a year later City stormed to the Fourth Division title, amassing a league record 111 goals and 74 points (two points for a win) en route.

Taylor quit to manage Watford in 1977 and, in 1979, Lincoln were back in Division Four.

In 1981 City were promoted to Division Three and in 1982 narrowly missed promotion to Division Two.

But the mid-eighties saw the club destabilized by financial and managerial problems and in 1986 City were relegated to Division Four.

Relegation to the Conference

A year later, Lincoln City Football Club became the first club to be automatically relegated to the Conference, but they bounced back after only one season as a non-league club.

They won promotion to Division Two in 1998, lasting only one season at the higher level.

Play-off Woes

Lincoln qualified for the promotion play-offs for five consecutive seasons between 2002 and 2007 but failed to gain promotion on each occasion.
