Liddell joined Liverpool as a 15 year old in 1930 and remained on the club's books until 1960. Primarily a left winger, he also excelled as a striker and was a mainstay of Liverpool's 1947 title winning side. This Liverpool legends influence on the team was so great that during the 1950's they were nicknamed "Liddellpool". Liddell died of Alzeimer's disease in 2001. He was voted Liverpool's sixth most influential player of all time in a 2006 poll.
One of the greatest managers in the history of English football, Shankly was appointed Liverpool manager in 1959. His early managerial career showed little hint of what was to follow, as he set about converting Liverpool from a struggling second division side to a powerhouse of English and European football. During his tenure Liverpool won 3 league championships, two FA Cups and the UEFA Cup. Shankly, arguably the greatest of Liverpool legends, retired in 1974, having laid the groundwork for the club's most successful era. He died of a heart attack in 1981.
St John was Liverpool's record signing when he moved from Motherwell in 1961, and quickly became a crowd favourite by scoring on his debut, against Everton. A wonderful header of the ball despite being only 5'7, St John former a lethal striking partnership with Roger Hunt. Moved to Coventry in 1971 having won two league titles and an FA Cup with Liverpool.
An outstanding striker, who holds the single season time goalscoring record for Liverpool(41), as well as the record for most league goals. His incisive attacking partnership with Ian St. John was a cornerstone of Liverpool's success during the sixties. He won two league titles and an FA Cup medal with Liverpool before moving to Bolton in 1970. Hunt was a member of England's 1966 World Cup winning team.
Bill Shankly was always going to be a hard act to follow, but Bob Paisley's achievements as Liverpool manager surpassed even those of the great man. After reluctantly taking over from Shankly in 1974, the former Liverpool skipper delivered 6 league titles, 3 European Cups, 3 League Cups and the UEFA Cup, in his nine years in charge. After his retirement this Liverpool legend was appointed a director of the club. He died of Alzeimer's disease in 1996.
His reputation as a hard man rather distracted from his skill and subtlety as a player. Smith was the first Liverpool captain to lift a European trophy (the UEFA Cup in 1973). His achievements as captain mark him as a true Liverpool legend, winning 4 league titles, 2 FA Cups, 2 UEFA Cups and the European Cup (scoring in the final). Left to join Swansea City in 1978.
One of Liverpool's great captains, and the first to win the European Cup, Hughes was also captain of England. An inspirational central defender who also chipped in with some spectacular goals (notably two against Everton in a Merseyside derby). Hughes won 4 league titles, 2 European Cups, 2 UEFA Cups and the FA Cup, before moving to Wolves in 1979.
One of the greatest keepers in the history of English football, Clemence joined Liverpool from Scunthorpe in 1968, and made his senior debut in 1969. Over the next 12 years he collected twelve trophies with Liverpool and kept an amazing 335 clean sheets in 666 appearances. He moved to Tottenham in 1981, winning an FA Cup medal with them, and played on almost until his 40th birthday.
Originally signed as a midfielder, Keegan's goalscoring prowess persuaded Bill Shankly to play him as a striker alongside John Toschack. The two formed a potent strike partnership which helped Liverpool to 3 League titles, two UEFA Cups, a European Cup and an FA Cup. Keegan scored 100 goals for Liverpool before a move to SV Hamburg, where he was twice named European Footballer of the Year.
This Liverpool legend is regarded by many Reds fans as the greatest player ever to represent the club. Dalglish was signed from Celtic in 1977, with the unenviable task of replacing Kevin Keegan. He soon won the fans over, scoring seven minutes into his debut and finishing the campaign as top scorer. Never the quickest, Dalglish compensated with superb ball control and speed of thought. His time at the club coincided with Liverpool's most successful period, with 13 major trophies won, including 3 League titles as player/manager. Dalglish quit as Liverpool manager in 1991, and later managed Blackburn Rovers to the Premier League title.
A skillful, elegant, centre half whose skill and vision was as effective setting up attacks as stopping the opposition. One of Bob Paisley's best ever signings, Hansen won an incredible eight league titles and three European Cups during his time at Anfield, and also captained Liverpool to their first League and FA Cup double in 1986. He retired due to injury in 1990 and is now a respected football pundit.
Rush holds records as Liverpool's all-time record goalscorer, most FA Cup goals, most FA Cup final goals, most League Cup goals and most international goals for Wales. He had two spells with Liverpool split by a season spent with Juventus in 1987-88. During his Reds career the Liverpool legend won 5 league titles, 5 League Cups, 3 FA Cups and the European Cup. Later played for Leeds and Newcastle.
One of the most revered figures in Liverpool's recent history, Fowler was known by the Kop simply as "God". An instinctive striker, he made his senior debut in 1993, aged just 18, and finished the season as top goalscorer. He scored 30 in each of the following three seasons and made his England debut in 1995/96. In 2000, he was made Liverpool captain and in 2001 led the team to the League Cup title, the first trophy in an unprecedented treble which included the FA Cup and the UEFA Cup. In November 2001, Liverpool boss Gerrard Houlier sold him to Leeds United, against the protests of Reds fans. Fowler's career failed to ignite at Leeds, and later at Manchester City. In 2006, Rafa Benitez re-signed the Liverpool legend, and he spent two seasons at he club before signing for Cardiff City.
