Loftus Road![]() ![]()
Loftus Road has been home to Queens Park Rangers since 1917 when they moved from the Park Royal Showground. The stadium is named after Robert Owen Loftus Versfeld, the founder of organised sports in South Africa, and a key contributor during the early years of the club. The four stands are called the Loftus Rd End (often shortened to The Loft), Ellerslie Road Stand, South Africa Road Stand (often called Little South Africa) and the School End, which is for away supporters. In 1981, QPR took the controversial step of installing an artificial pitch at the ground, the first such surface to be used in British professional football. The surface was hugely unpopular with visiting teams and was eventually replaced by grass in April 1988 after a change in FA rules. In December 2007, following the takeover by Bernie Ecclestone and Flavio Briatore it was announced that the club had no immediate plans to leave but that the stadium would be upgraded with the possibility adding an additional 7, 000 seats to the Ellerslie Road Stand.
