The original Macclesfield Town FC was founded in the mid-1800s, but played under the rugby code until 1874 when association rules were adopted.

They joined the Combination League in 1890 and a year later they moved to the Moss Rose Ground where the modern club still plays.

Hallifield FC

In 1897, after finishing bottom of the Combination, the club was wound up, and the Moss Road ground was taken over by the amateur club Hallifield FC.

In 1899, Hallifield took over the name Macclesfield FC, and played under that name until the outbreak of World War One when the club went into liquidation.

A new club was founded in 1919, and under the name Macclesfield FC, competed in the Cheshire League until the Second World War. The club was then closed down until a new limited company was formed in 1946.

League and Cup Winners

In 1969, Macclesfield were founder members of the Northern Premier League, winning the title at the first attempt, and in 1970 they won the FA Trophy at Wembley.

Financial Woes

However, financial problems forced the club to cut back on playing staff and by the end of the Seventies they were struggling to survive in the NPL.

Their fortunes revived during the Eighties and in 1987 they were promoted to the Conference.

Promotion to the Football League

In 1994, they won the Conference title but were denied promotion because their ground did not meet the required standard. Having made the requisite improvements to Moss Rose, they won the Conference again in 1997 to gain promotion to the Football League.

In their first season, Macclesfield won promotion as Division Three runners-up, but the step up in class proved too much and they were relegated the following season.
