Millwall Rovers were founded in 1885 by workers at Morton's Jam Factory on the Isle of Dogs. In 1893 Rovers became Millwall Athletic and joined the Southern League. In 1903 they reached the FA Cup semi-finals and that same year dropped “Athletic” from their name. In 1910, the club relocated to The Den in New Cross, south of the Thames, and in 1920 became founder members of the new Division Three. In 1928, The Lions were promoted to Division Two where they remained until relegation in 1933. They returned to Division Two in 1938 but with the resumption of league football after the war they were relegated back to Division Three (South) and, when the regional divisions were scrapped in 1958, the club found itself in Division Four. 1966 saw the club return to Division Two and set a record of 59 home League games without defeat. In 1972 they narrowly missed promotion to the First Division, but three years later they were back in Division Three. They bounced back at the first attempt but 1979 saw them relegated again. The club were promoted back into the Second Division in 1985 and, in 1988, won the Second Division title to take their place in the top flight for the first time. A respectable 10th place finish followed in 1989, but they were relegated again in 1990. In May 1993 the club moved to the 20,000 seater “New Den” at Senegal Fields and the side managed by Mick McCarthy became regular promotion challengers. However, after McCarthy’s departure to manage the Republic of Ireland in 1995, the team's form deteriorated and they were relegated to Division Two (old Third Division). In January 1997 the club went into administration but a rescue package was put in place and the club survived. Four years later, in 2001, Millwall returned to Division One and, in 2002, they narrowly missed promotion to the Premiership, losing out in the play-offs. Dennis Wise and Ray Wilkins took charge in October 2003, and led the club to their first ever FA Cup Final in May 2004, where they lost 3-0 to Manchester United at the Millennium Stadium. Wise left at the end of the 2004-05 season and, in 2006, the Lions were relegated from the Championship to League One (old Third Division).
