In December 1917, the club went into voluntary liquidation and 11 months later, was formally wound up. In February 1919, sufficient capital was raised to reform the club and they rejoined the Southern League. The following season they were founder members of Division Three.

In 1934 the Canaries won the Third Division (South) championship and, in 1935, they moved to Carrow Road, their current home. 1939 brought relegation by the narrowest of margins - 0.048 of a goal.

City had to apply for re-election in 1947 and 1948, but performances steadily improved and they were regularly among the contenders for promotion until 1957, when a disastrous season saw them having to apply for re-election again. The following year, when the regional divisions were scrapped, they were placed in Division Three.

In 1958-59 City made it all the way to FA Cup semi-finals, beating Manchester United, Spurs and Sheffield United en route. A year later they were promoted to Division Two and, in 1962 they won the League Cup.

In 1972 Norwich City were promoted to the First Division for the first time. They lasted just two seasons before being relegated but bounced back immediately in 1975. This sequence was repeated in 1981 and 1985 - relegated only to return the following season to the top flight. 1985 also saw them lift the League Cup for a second time.

City finished third in the Premiership in 1993 and qualified for European competition for the first time. A rousing campaign saw them beat Bayern Munich before losing narrowly to Inter Milan. Unable to maintain these high standards, they were relegated again in 1995.

In 1996, with the club in financial difficulty, a new board, which included TV chef Delia Smith, took over.

City won the Division One title in 2004, and returned briefly to the Premier League, before being relegated in 2005.
