![]() Founded in 1862, Notts County FC is the oldest league club still in existence (although there are several non-league clubs that are older). Founder Members of the Football LeagueCounty first entered the FA Cup in 1877, and were founder members of the Football League in 1888. FA Cup WinnersThey were losing FA Cup finalists in 1891 and, in 1894 while a Second Division outfit, they won the trophy for the first and so far, only time. Top Flight Ups and DownsCounty were Second Division champions in 1897, and remained in the top flight until 1913. They won the Second Division again in 1913/14 and this time stayed up until 1920. Second Division champions for a third time in 1922/23 they again found the going in the top tier too tough and in 1926 they were back in Division Two. Worse was to follow in 1930, when the club dropped into Division Three (North) for the first time. True to form, they bounced straight back and this time remained in Division Two until 1935. Relegation to Division FourThey spent the bulk of the Fifties in Division Two before successive relegations in 1958 and 1959 took them to Division Four for the first time. They remained in the two bottom divisions throughout the Sixties, but the Seventies brought an upturn in form which saw them reach Division One in 1981. Unable to cope at this level, they again suffered successive relegations in 1984 and 1985. County were back in Division Three. In 1987 local businessman Derek Pavis took control of the club and successive promotions took them back to Division One in 1991. Perhaps inevitably, they suffered immediate relegation and, by 1997, were back in the bottom division. The following year they won the title to return to Division Two (old Third Division). AdministrationIn 2002, County went into administration and were relegated at the end of the 2002-03 season. The club spent 18 months in administration, and were in danger of going out of business before the intervention of a local consortium. In 2004, Notts County were relegated back to Division Three. Turmoil and TriumphThey 2009/10 season saw an abortive takeover attempt by a Middle-Eastern group fronted by Sven-Goran Eriksson. There were also four managers during the course of the season but despite these problems County comfortably won the division, finishing 10 points clear of Bournemouth.
