Oxford United FC was founded in 1897 by the Reverend John Scott-Tucker, and a local doctor named Robert Hitchings. The club was originally called Headington, then Headington United, and played under that name until 1956 when the current name was adopted.

Elected to the football League

Oxford were elected to the Football League in 1962 after winning the Southern League. They remained in the Fourth Division for two years before gaining promotion to Division Three.

In 1968 they won the Third Division title, and spent eight seasons in the second tier before relegation in 1976.

Robert Maxwell buys the Club

Five years later they were still languishing in the Third Division when millionaire publisher, Robert Maxwell bought the club.

League Cup Winners

Successive titles in 1984 and 1985 took Oxford into the First Division for the first time in their history. They remained in the top-flight for three seasons, and also won the League Cup in April 1986.

However, following Maxwell's death in 1991, the club ran into financial difficulties were forced to sell many of their best players. This started a slide through the divisions which saw them in the Third division by 1994.

In 1995, the club was granted permission to build a new stadium but the cost of the stadium saw them forced into administration, and by 2001 they had dropped into League Two, the bottom tier of the Football League.

Out of the League and Back in

Worse was to follow in 2006 when they were relegated to the Conference on the last day of the season.

They remained in non-league football until 2010 when they were promoted to Football League Two via a 3-1 play-off final win over York City.
