Peterborough United was founded in 1934 after the demise of the original Peterborough & Fletton United.
The new club was admitted to the Midland League, where they struggled, having to seek re-election in 1939.
After the war, their league performances began to improve and they gained a reputation as FA Cup giant killers, eliminating 8 league clubs over the next 15 years.
Then, in 1960, after years of rejected applications, the Posh were elected to the Football League Fourth Division.
They made an immediate impact, scoring a record 134 goals en route to winning the Division.
Over the next two seasons, the Posh continued to challenge for promotion but in 1968 a Football League enquiry found the club guilty of various irregularities, and as a punishment ordered their relegation.
They won the Division Four championship for a second time in 1974 but five years later they were back in the bottom tier.
1991 brought promotion to Division Three and the following season, they secured promotion to Division One (old Second Division), via the playoffs.
They survived only two seasons in Division One and by 1997 they were back in the lowest tier (now Division Three) again.
In 2000 they won through the play-offs to return to Division Two but in 2005 they were relegated again to what was now called League Two (old Division Four).
In 2008, they were promoted to League One, having finished as runner-up to MK Dons.
