![]() The original Plymouth Argyle FC, known simply as Argyle FC, was founded in 1886 but went out of existence in 1894, before being reformed in 1897. Move to Home ParkThe club won its first honour, the Devon Senior League, in 1900 and that same year Argyle purchased the lease on Home Park, which remains their home ground to this day. Argyle applied to join the Southern League in May 1903 and were voted straight into the First Division. Argyle elected to the Football LeagueIn 1920 they joined the new Third Division of the Football League. Six Times Runners UpThey were Third Division (South) runners-up an unprecedented six successive times between 1922 and 1927, before eventually winning the title, and promotion, in 1930. After a stay of twenty years, the Pilgrims were relegated in 1950 but returned to the Second Division two years later. 1956 saw them relegated again and three years they regained their Second Division status. Argyle dropped into Division Three in 1968, and spent six seasons there before winning promotion in 1975 only to suffer relegation again in 1977. FA Cup Semi FinalistsIn 1984, while still in the Third Division, they reached the FA Cup semi-final, but were narrowly beaten by Watford. Promotion to Division Two followed in 1986 but in 1992 they club was relegated yet again. Climbing out of the BasementIn 1995 Plymouth were relegated to the Third Division (old Fourth Division) for the first time in their history, and although they won promotion at the first attempt, they were back in Division Three in 1998. 2002 brought the Third Division title and, two years later, they won the Second Division to regain their place in The Championship (old Second Division). However, in 2009/10 Plymouth were relegated to League One, and a year later dropped into League Two, after a 10-point deduction for entering administration.
