Red alert for 'Battle of Britain'

Manchester police are on high alert as thousands of Rangers fans descend on the city for tonight's Champions League Group stage match with Manchester United.

The last time Rangers played in Manchester was the UEFA Cup final against Zenit St Petersburg at The City of Manchester Stadium in May 2008.

On that occasion there was a riot after one of the big screens set up in the city centre to show the game, broke down.

United boss Alex Ferguson branded the behaviour of some Rangers fans as 'appalling'

Ferguson said: "We have good cause to remember a match that pained me as some of the visiting supporters ran amok.

"It was a good idea to have city screens showing the match live, but hardly helpful when the relay failed. It's no excuse for the appalling behaviour of a section of fans."
