Rooney faces hostile reception on return to Goodison

Given his high-profile desertion of the club he claims to love, Wayne Rooney is always guaranteed a hot reception at Goodison.

Today however that reception will carry an extra edge, with the current crisis in his private life gleefully seized upon by the Everton faithful.

Blues fans are unlikely to show any mercy. The abuse will be uncomfortable, personal, and unrelenting.

However, there is no possibility of Rooney sitting this one out, despite the fact that he rarely performs well for United at Everton.

Meanwhile, Everton midfielder Mikel Arteta has called for calm, saying: 'Wayne normally gets a bit of stick on Merseyside and I'll be giving him a bit as well.

'But I don't like to see the people behaving badly towards Wayne. He loves Everton. He left for a massive club and brought a lot of money to ours. He's not said anything bad about this club and we like him here.'
