Rooney told: 'Join City and Die'

Wayne Rooney last night received death threats as an angry mob of Manchester United supporters gathered outside his home in the Cheshire village of Prestbury.

Police confirmed that a group of about 40 men, some in balaclavas and hoodies, converged on the player's home. A banner with the words 'Join City & Die' was unfurled.

A police spokesman said: 'At 8.30pm, a call was received from a resident in Prestbury regarding 20 to 30 people assembling outside their address. Police attended the scene and the group dispersed peacefully.'

Rooney is believed to have watched the commotion from an upstairs window, while his wife Coleen and baby son Kai are also believed to have been in the house.

The latest episode in the saga comes after Rooney attempted to appease fans by releasing a statement suggesting that his decision to leave United was due to a lack of assurances from chief executive David Gill over the club's ambitions.

However, the PR exercise appears to have backfired, with team-mates, past players and supporters turning on the former United idol.
