Roots Hall![]() ![]()
Roots Hall is a 12,392 capacity stadium, which is the home of Southend United. Southend were formed in 1906 and played at the ground until the outbreak of the First World War, when Roots Hall was designated for storage and they were forced out. After the war the club decided not to return and opted instead on a move to a new ground at the Kursaal. Thereafter the site of the old ground fell into disrepair and was used as a rubbish tip. In 1952 the club bought the old Roots Hall site in order to build a new stadium. However, work on the ground could not begin immediately due to the huge quantities of rubbish which had been dumped there in the club's absence. Removing the waste took the best part of a year, but finally on 20 August 1955 Roots Hall hosted its first match, against Norwich City. The ground was far from finished by this time, but over the years the stadium was steadily improved and by 1979, hosted its record attendance, 31,033 for an FA Cup tie against Liverpool. The club has announced that they intend relocating to a new 22,000 seater stadium in the future. More Southend United stuff here;
