![]() Thornhill UnitedRotherham United were founded in 1870, under the name Thornhill United. In 1905 Thornhill United became Rotherham County and competed in the Midland League until 1919, when they were elected to Football League Division Two. Unable to cope with the step up in class, County were relegated to Division Three (North) in 1923. Applying for Re-electionIn 1925 the club finished bottom and had to apply for re-election. In May of that year, County merged with another local team Rotherham Town to form Rotherham United. However, the new club fared no better than the previous one, and in 1931 had to apply for re-election again. Things improved somewhat after the war, with United finishing as runners-up three times in succession between 1947 and 1949. Division Three ChampionsThey were champions of Division Three (North) in 1951 and, in 1955, finished third in Division Two - the closest they have come to winning promotion to the top flight. The club held on to its place in Division Two until 1968 and then went into a decline that took them to Division Four in 1973. In 1975, they were promoted back to the Division Three, and they were Third Division champions in 1981 to return briefly to Division Two. Third Division WinnersBy 1988, United were again in Division Four but won the Division title at the first attempt. During the Nineties Rotherham were regularly promoted and relegated between the bottom two divisions, before successive promotions in 2000 and 2001 took them back to Division One (old Second Division). AdministrationThey were relegated to the third tier in 2005 and, in 2007, having received a ten point deduction for entering administration, United were back in the lowest division. The club entered administration again in February 2008, and the subsequent 10 point deduction destroyed any hope of a promotion push. They finished the season in 10th place – 6 points outside the play-off places. Relocation to Don ValleyIn 2008 Rotherham were forced to leave their Millmoor Ground and relocate to the Don Valley Stadium, after a dispute with their landlords. They reached the play-off final in 2010, but lost out to Dagenham & Redbridge. Click on the icons below for more on Rotherham United FC;
