Scunthorpe United has existed (under various names) since 1899, but only gained admittance to the Football League in 1950, when the regional third divisions were expanded.

Division Three Champions

As Scunthorpe & Lindsey United, they were Division Three (North) champions in 1958, and that close season, they dropped the "& Lindsey" from their name.

They remained in Division Two until 1964 (achieving a fourth place finish in 1962), but after relegation the club fell into decline and by 1968 The Iron were in the Fourth Division.

Promotion and Relegation

In 1972 Scunthorpe were promoted but managed only a single season in Division Three before being relegated again.

In 1982, they had to apply for re-election. Promoted in 1983, they again spent only one year at the higher level.

Between 1988 and 1992, Scunthorpe reached the play-offs four times out of five but were unsuccessful each time.

Move to Glanford Park

In 1998 the Old Show Ground was sold and Scunthorpe acquired a brand new, purpose built stadium at Glanford Park.

A year later they finally won promotion via the play-offs. True to form, they lasted for only one season in Division Three.

Worse was to follow in 2004, when they narrowly avoided relegation to the Conference.

Promotion to the Championship

In 2005, Scunthorpe were promoted to League One (previously the Third Division), and in 2007, they won promotion to the Championship, where they spent two seasons before relegation in 2008.

They returned to the Championship via the play-offs in 2009, only to make a quick return to League One 2 seasons later.
