The new club was named Sheffield United and played its first game in August 1889. In 1892 United applied for membership of the Football League and were invited to join the Second Division. They won the division at the first attempt and would remain in the First Division until 1934.

In 1898 The Blades won the First Division championship for the first and so far only time in their history.

The following year they won the FA Cup, and after losing the 1901 final to Tottenham, they won the cup for a second time in 1902, beating Southampton. Their third triumph came in 1915, when they beat Chelsea in the final.

They won the Cup for a fourth time in 1925 but in 1934 they were relegated to the Second Division. In 1936, while still a Division Two side they reached another FA Cup Final but lost to Arsenal.

In 1939 they returned to the top flight, but when football resumed after the war they became something of a “yo-yo” side and they moved between the top two divisions no fewer than seven times between 1946 and 1976.

In 1975 United finished sixth in Division One but thereafter went into a steep decline that saw them relegated to Division Two in 1976 and, by the 1980-81 season, the Blades found themselves in Division Four.

They were Fourth Division champions in 1982 and two years later they were back in Division Two. Relegated again 1988, they staged a remarkable comeback that brought successive promotions and a place in Division One by 1990.

In 1994, however, the club were relegated from the Premiership. They were promoted to the top flight in 2006 but relegated back to the Championship in 2007.
