Football History

Sheffield Wednesday Football Club was formed on the 4th September 1867 by members of the the Wednesday Cricket Club.

The Wednesday Cricket & Football Club

The new club was officially named The Wednesday Cricket & Football Club, and played their matches on Wednesday afternoons when local tradesmen had the afternoon off.

By 1883 the club was one of the strongest in the country and in 1887, The Wednesday formally became a professional team.

Alliance champions and Election to the Football League

Wednesday were not invited to join to the Football League in 1888 so the club president formed the rival Football Alliance, with Wednesday winning the first championship in 1889.

Then, in 1892, the Alliance was incorporated into the Football League and The Wednesday were elected to play in Division One.

League and FA Cup Winners

After consecutive semi-final appearances The Wednesday won the English FA Cup in 1896.

In 1899 they were relegated to Division Two, but bounced straight back and were First Division champions in 1903 and 1904. They also won the FA Cup again in 1907.

In 1920 the club were relegated again. They won promotion as Division Two champions in 1926 and went on to win consecutive Division One titles for a second time in 1929 and 1930.

Name Change to Sheffield Wednesday

Also in 1929, the club formally changed their name from The Wednesday to Sheffield Wednesday.

In 1935 they won the FA Cup for the third time but two years later, they were relegated back to Division Two.

Relegation and Promotion during the Fifties

During the Fifties 1950s, the "Owls" (after the club's home in the Owlerton district of Sheffield) were promoted and relegated between the top two divisions with monotonous regularity but after promotion in 1959 they managed to gain a foothold in the top flight and would remain there until 1970.

Relegation to the Third Division

In 1975 they dropped into the Third Division for the first time in their history, but in 1980 they were promoted back to Division Two and four years later the club was back in Division One.

Other than one season in Division Two (1990-91), Wednesday remained a top flight side until 2000 when they began another downward slide through the leagues.

They were in Division One (the old Third Division) by 2003, but in 2005 gained promotion to the Championship.

In 2009/10 they dropped back into League One.
