Southend United

Southend United were founded in 1906, after the landlord of the Blue Boar Hotel, Oliver Trigg, met with some friends and formed the club to replace the defunct Southend Athletic.

United were immediately admitted to the Second Division of the Southern League, winning promotion to the First Division in 1908.

In 1920, Southend were founder members of Division Three (South) when the Southern League Division One was incorporated into the Football League. They remained at this level until 1958 when the regional divisions were scrapped and they were placed in the new Third Division.

In 1968 United were relegated to the Fourth Division and remained there until 1972. The team then entered a phase which saw four promotions and as many relegations over the next 18 years.

In 1990, they were promoted to the Third Division and the following season, against all expectations, United were promoted again.

They remain in Division Two for six seasons, but in 1997 they were relegated to Division Two (old Third Division) and then immediately to Division Three, the lowest tier of the Football League.

They won promotion back to League One (Third Division) in 2005 and, after winning the League One title in 2006, the Shrimpers were back in the second tier, or the Championship as it was now known.

The 2006/07 season brought a memorable League Cup victory over Manchester United, but their league form was less impressive and Southend were relegated back to League One.

They reached the League One play-offs in 2008, but lost out to Doncaster Rovers.
