The Stadium of Light has been home to Sunderland AFC since it opened in 1997.

In 1989, following the release of the Taylor Report, Sunderland were faced with the task of transforming their Roker Park ground to an all seater stadium. When this proved impossible, due to its location in a residential area, it was decided to build a new stadium.

A site was indentified at the former Wearmouth Colliery, just a few hundred yards from Roker Park, and construction began in June 1996.

The 42, 000 capacity stadium was completed in 1997, and in 2000 the capacity was increased to 49, 000.

Once the stadium is completely developed it will hold 64, 000.

The stadium is renowned for its atmosphere and in a 07/08 survey, was recognised as the loudest ground in the country - the 3rd time it has won this award. Return from Stadium of Light to Sunderland
