Stockport County FC was founded in 1883 by members of the Wycliffe Congregational Church. The club was originally called Heaton Norris Rovers, and later Heaton Norris FC before taking the current name in 1890.

They played initially in the Football Combination, and later in the Lancashire League, before being elected to Football League Division Two in 1900.

After seeking re-election four times in succession, they eventually lost their place to Doncaster Rovers in 1904 and re-joined the Midland League.

The following season, they applied unsuccessful to rejoin the League. However, when it was then decided to expand the League, they managed to secure one of the four vacancies.

In 1921, County were relegated to the new Third Division (North), but they returned a year later, as champions.

They remained in Division Two until 1926, when they were relegated again, returning briefly to the Second Division in 1937.

In 1958, they were placed in Division Three after the scrapping of the regional leagues, but they survived only a single season in the new national Third Division.

Promotion followed in 1967 but in 1970 they were back in the Fourth Division, and they had to apply for re-election in 1974, 1975, 1976 and 1985.

The Nineties saw a significant improvement in County’s form. Promoted to Division Three in 1991, they reached the play-offs for the next three seasons and in 1997 won automatic promotion to Division One (old Second Division).

They finished eighth in Division One in 1998, but, they were unable to maintain their form at this level and relegation in 2002 and 2005 saw the club back in the lowest division (League Two) and facing bankruptcy.

In July 2005 the club’s owners, Cheshire Sport, sold their interests to the Stockport County Supporters’ Club, making County the latest in a growing band of community owned clubs.

In 2006, County narrowly avoided relegation to the Conference, but bounced back to secure promotion to League One via the play-offs in 2008.
